Real is better #YGKLOVE

Finding love is a complicated thing. There’s so much ado about it, so much poetry, so much philosophy, so much biology. You’d think we’d dismiss with it altogether, for how complicated things can get. Alas, we don’t.

For Liz and me, finding love is not so complicated. We just walk around and lo-and-behold, love heads our way. It’s everywhere and it’s not always blatant, either.
The thing is that when you find real love, it lets you live in your own skin. Comfortably. For Liza and Eduardo that’s the case, no doubt.

Liza can’t get the smile off her face. She walks with Eduardo down Princess Street and they’re looking for something. Shoes? I don’t quite remember. He just started his PhD at Queen’s (in Chemistry). Some might call him a smarty-pants, but he’s about as carefree as it gets, just enjoying Kingston life with his girl.

She’s originally from Russia, and speaks at least Russian, German, and English, which comes in handy since she works as a translator. The wind blows and her hair ends up in her face. They laugh about it and he waits adoringly until she fixes it. Our cameras are working overtime because it’s too cute to miss.

They show us photographs her parents took while traveling around the Caucasus Mountains. (I don’t fail to note how much love and respect Eduardo has for Liza’s parents.) The parents are dressed in cool blues and greens, snuggled in thick hiking jackets, set against a backdrop of a cool jade-green lake amidst rocky mountain peaks, or – in one shot – riding donkeys. It is a vastly different scape from the hot urban street scene we are photographing right now, with Liza’s hot-pink shirt and a stack of yellow and orange card in the background. But maybe not so much. Because we are photographing a couple in love. And on Liza’s phone are photographs of a slightly older couple, yet clearly in love. The couples have in common a type of quiet love that signifies strength and an implicit reliance on one another. The Quirky Love type of love.

Maybe we ought to add the Caucasus Mountains to the list of tour destinations...
